SCANDINAVIAN BEYOND BASICS

Do you have friends who are not Skandia regulars but who enjoy dancing Scandinavian dances at Folklife or at a contra dance? Bring them along! Gain new skills and meet other enthusiastic dancers.

Thursday's Beyond Basics class series will cover the dances most commonly done at our Friday night dance parties. Each five-week session will be taught by different teachers and will focus on different dances. This is your opportunity to polish a dance you already enjoy or add a classic dance to your repertoire. Students should have a working knowledge of the dances taught in the Basics series, such as snoa, schottis, waltz, and hambo.

Skandia celebrates its talented musicians and their exciting repertoire of tunes from Western Dalarna for the first Beyond Basics class of 2008. Join Elaine Mathies and Larry Reinert on Thursday evenings for an enjoyable tour of the most common dances from the Western Dalarna region. Dances presented will include both of the slängpolskor from Malung and the polska from Älvdalen.

The Beyond Basics class will add to your repertoire with its focus on Skandia's favorite regional dances. The popular Wednesday night mixers, with a program of figure, mixer and couple dances, are the week after each series. No partner required. Smooth-soled shoes will help you turn. A minimum of eight participants is required for each series.

Along with our Skandia crowd we welcome dancers who are not Skandia regulars but who enjoy dancing Scandinavian dances at Folklife or other venues. Come by yourself or with a friend. Gain new skills and meet other enthusiastic dancers!

Art Hare and Larry Reinert present the Skandia Summer Series, with a delightful selection of favorite set and mixer dances. These lively dances, such as Trekantet Sløjfe, Firetur fra Romerike, Kadrilj från Landskrona and Gustavs Skål, popular dances in Skandia's earlier days, are done with two or more couples. Long-time Skandia members will have fun refreshing their memories. Those new to Scandinavian dance will enjoy an introduction to this rich tradition. Turning dances will not be taught, though steps may be reviewed in the context of the dances.

This is a great opportunity to invite your friends, family, and neighbors to experience Scandinavian dance and music!
